I have developed a framework for bespoke police management training that covers
four key police management topics :
1.
Setting
targets, which
covers:
- Cascading
force targets to departments and individuals
- Identifying
local targets that will deliver force targets
- Agreeing
local targets with those who have to achieve them
- Identifying
appropriate performance measures for local targets
2.
Performance
measurement, which
covers:
- Identifying
the activity to be measured
- Establishing
performance indicators
- Analysing
actual performance
- Comparing
actual performance to indicators
- Modifying
performance indicators
3. Solving
problems, which
covers:
- Defining the
problem
- Gathering
relevant information (Scanning)
- Identifying
possible causes (Analysis)
- Identifying
possible solutions (Response)
- Monitoring
results (Assessment)
4. Motivating staff, which
covers:
- Finding out what staff want from
work
-
Management by ‘wandering
about’
-
Removing demotivators
-
Managing change
-
Providing feedback
Each input will be based on
information provided by a force/Area/Division so that it is very relevant to what they
are doing.
Each input is followed by group exercises lasting 30 minutes and which,
where possible, uses real and existing situations thereby ensuring that
delegates gain maximum benefit from their experiences.
The whole programme seeks to
emphasise the responsibility and accountability that goes with a management
role. A common thread throughout the
training is the need to manage change in order to motivate and encourage staff
and thereby minimise grievances. The target is to encourage the development of
novel and innovative approaches to identified policing
problems.
There is a great deal of preparation
required to personalise this to a force or Area so I need a one month ‘lead in’ time to set this up for a force/Area/Division.
